Thanks to the new Zanzibar Airport, getting around Tanzania has become simpler. The main airport on Zanzibar is Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, once called Kisauni Airport or Zanzibar International Airport. You will find it roughly 5 km south of Zanzibar City, the lively capital of Tanzania’s beach haven. Most international flights coming in from East Africa, Europe and the Middle East land here, using it as their entry point to Tanzania.
The new Zanzibar Airport 2022
As Zanzibar’s popularity keeps growing, the Tanzanian government has set about renewing the old airport by adding a modern international Terminal that works far better. For anyone travelling to Tanzania this is very good news, as it makes the island paradise of Zanzibar more accessible for even more adventures. With the new facilities, more travellers can move through the airport smoothly each day, and the travel services on offer will be better too.
Since December 2021, Terminal 1 has been out of use, while Terminal 2 handles domestic flights and houses the airport office. Work on Terminal 3 is close to being finished. When it is done, the new airport is set to open its doors to international travellers by the summer of 2022. Besides giving a fresh and pleasant welcome at the outset of travellers’ journey’s through Tanzania, the new airport will also bring a variety of practical new services for travelers.

Free Wi-Fi across the entire terminal and a dedicated client service centre are among the new services that travellers flying into Zanzibar International Airport can soon look forward to. Further upgrades and services include:
- brand-new modern architecture
- air conditioning in the arrivals and departures halls
- baggage packing and self-check-in,
- airport management outsourced to a high standard,
- faster check-in
- streamlined security process
- VIP (CIP) lounge
- large waiting areas
- improved shops and cafés
- prayer rooms
- more elevators and better access for disabled travellers
- passengers leaving the aeroplane directly at the terminal (no bus required!)
- multiple luggage carousels
- a large parking area
