Plenty of stars call Tanzania home… most of them with four legs. From the Big Five to the Small Five, from graceful giraffes to bad-tempered buffalos, this East African country is packed with VIAs (Very Important Animals). But what about the two-legged Tanzanians who have drawn attention with remarkable achievements? As it happens, Tanzania has produced a wide range of influential figures, and you may already know some of them. In this article we shine a light on ten of the best-known people from Tanzania, who have left their mark at home and abroad.
Julius Nyerere
As Prime Minister of Tanganyika from 1961 to 1962, Julius Nyerere played a huge part in Tanzania’s anti-colonial movement. From 1962 to 1964 he was President of Tanganyika, and from 1964 to 1985 he served as president of its successor state, Tanzania.
He was also a founding member and leader of the Tanganyika African National Union party and of its successor, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (from 1954 to 1990). A supporter of African nationalism and African socialism, he actively promoted Ujamaa, a distinctive socio-political philosophy.
Given everything he achieved, it is no wonder that Julius Nyerere is such a well-loved and famous Tanzanian. His fame even led to the northern part of the Selous Game Reserve being renamed Nyerere National Park in 2019.

Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete
Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete was the country’s fourth president, from 2005 to 2015, so he naturally earns a spot in our top ten of Tanzania’s famous people. Prior to becoming president, Kikwete shaped the nation’s international relations as Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1995 to 2005, serving under a certain Benjamin Mkapa.
His influence reached beyond national duties, too, since he also held important roles in regional organisations. He chaired the African Union from 2008 to 2009, and from 2012 to 2013 he was chairman of the Southern African Development Community Troika on Peace, Defence, and Security.
Kikwete is highly valued among famous Tanzanians, and he is proud of the roots he has in his Tanzanian tribal heritage.
Flaviana Matata
The next name is Flaviana Matata, a much-admired Tanzanian celebrity and fashion model. In 2013 Forbes Africa listed her among the highest-earning models in Africa, and she has also made it into the publicly voted Top 100 Women in Africa.
Her rise to fame started when she won the first Miss Universe Tanzania pageant in 2007, which meant she represented Tanzania at Miss Universe that same year. There she made the top 15 semi-finalists and came 6th in the evening gown round.
Taking part in Miss Universe 2007 broke new ground: she was the first Tanzanian ever to compete, and remarkably she did it with her head completely shaved. To be honest, she looked absolutely stunning, flowing locks or not.
Ray C
A well-known Tanzanian celebrity, Ray C is a chart-topping musician who has made a name for herself across the country in the popular Afro-pop and Bongo Flava scene. Before becoming famous, she entertained music fans as a presenter on Clouds FM, a radio station in Dar es Salaam.
With her first album, “Mapenzi Yangu”, Ray C started out on her path to becoming a leading name among famous Tanzanians. Her music has found an audience outside Tanzania as well, taking her to perform in countries such as Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and Mozambique. Nor is her success confined to Africa: fans in places like China, the United Kingdom, much of Europe, Australia, and Thailand dance to her distinctive style.

Ali Kiba
Ali, a well-loved Tanzanian singer and songwriter, ranks among the best-known musicians in Tanzania. Born in Kigoma, he also runs the Kings Music label, through which his album “Cinderella” became a remarkable success. It has in fact gone on to be the best-selling album in the countries of East Africa.
At the 2022 Tanzania Music Awards, Ali Kiba was recognised as the most awarded artist, taking home five awards and cementing his place as a leading Tanzanian celebrity.
Christopher Mwashinga
Born in Mbeya, Christopher Mwashinga is a Tanzanian author and poet who now lives in the United States. He writes mainly Christian poetry, and his work has appeared in mainstream anthologies in the US.
Hasheem Thabeet
In the world of sport, Hasheem Thabeet is probably Tanzania’s most famous name. Having played college basketball at UConn (University of Connecticut), he was chosen second overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2009 NBA draft. His NBA career has been much debated, and some analysts considered his performance as a top draft pick highly noteworthy, thanks to his limitless raw talent and his intuitive feel for the game.
He went back to his roots in Tanzania in 2021. Playing for Savio, he led the team to the Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball League (RBA) title and was named Finals MVP.
Diamond Platnumz
Nasibu Abdul Juma Issack, best known as Diamond Platnumz, is a Tanzanian bongo flava artist, dancer, philanthropist, and businessman. Of Ha heritage, he founded the WCB Wasafi Record Label, Wasafi Bet, and Wasafi Media, and his influence across East and Central Africa is enormous. Rather impressively, Diamond was the first artist based in Africa to reach one billion views on YouTube.
He signed with Universal Music in 2017 and went on to release “A Boy from Tandale.” In 2021, Diamond Platnumz and WCB Wasafi teamed up with Warner Music Group, and he became a well-known Tanzanian celebrity among people of every age.

Harmonize
Better known as Harmonize, Rajab Abdul Kahali is a huge name in Tanzanian music, especially within the Bongo Flava genre. Because of his Makonde heritage, people often call him ‘Konde Boy’.
Harmonize moves with ease between local Tanzanian villages and glamorous international stages, a career that reflects the diversity of Tanzania itself.
Benjamin Fernandes
Benjamin Fernandes became well known both as a Tanzanian entrepreneur and as a former presenter on national television. His work with the Digital and Financial Services teams of The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation drew attention in the USA and made him famous on both sides of the Atlantic.
Fernandes was the first Tanzanian to join the Stanford Graduate School of Business as an Africa MBA Fellow, and he is also the youngest African ever admitted to this prestigious school. In 2017 he made history again as the first Tanzanian to take part in programmes at both the Stanford Graduate School of Business and the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government.
