Five times in a row now, Tanzania has been voted Best Safari Country in Africa. SafariBookings.com ran this extensive survey, in which more than 2,500 safari travellers and experts took part. Among the panel were 22 well-known guidebook writers, for instance from Rough Guides and Lonely Planet. The result was a clear win for Tanzania. Zanzibar, a favourite beach add-on after a safari, also scored very well.

What makes Tanzania the best safari country?
Natural wonders of Africa
Three of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa lie in northern Tanzania. The first is Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent; the second is the great wildebeest migration, the largest overland migration on earth; and the third is the Ngorongoro Crater, which holds the highest concentration of wildlife.
Unspoilt nature
In Tanzania you can still enjoy a genuine safari, something few countries can offer today. Almost 35% of the country’s land is covered by national parks and game reserves. That is a vast area of open plains and dirt tracks without fences. The scenery is pure and remarkably varied: savannah, lakes and craters, but also valleys, forests, mountains and tropical beaches.

Fascinating cultures
The country brings together a rich mix of cultures. Over 120 ethnic groups, from the Maasai warriors to the Hadzabe bushmen, live side by side in peace. Every group has its own religion, rituals, customs, art, music and dance. On cultural tours to tribes and local villages, you get to learn about these ways of life first hand.
Safe and welcoming
Thanks to its political stability, and because Muslims, Christians and 120 different tribes share the country peacefully, Tanzania is regarded as one of the safest countries in Africa. Tanzanians are warm, friendly people who are always ready to lend a hand.
