Prison Island was originally built to keep Zanzibari citizens in isolation on the island. Nowadays it’s home to a tortoise sanctuary and a hotel. The island is a 20-minute boat trip from Zanzibar’s capital Stone Town, and here you see giant tortoises shuffling between the trees (some are thought to be more than 100 years old!). While on the island, you can visit the sanctuary, walk along the hiking trails, or swim in the crystal clear water around the island.
