Around 40 kilometers northeast of its well-known big brother, the Ngorongoro Crater, lies the Empakaai Crater, in a spot that feels almost like the end of the world. From the rim, you hike down to the lake on the crater floor, a walk of roughly 45 minutes. You are greeted by a pink glow, because the lake is often covered with flocks of flamingos. The views from the rim are wonderful, and on clear days you can even make out the majestic Ol Donyo Lengai.
