In the suburbs of Arusha, tucked into a coffee estate on the edge of Maasai country, you find a lovely private retreat called Meru House Lekisilai. The first part of its name comes from the impressive Mount Meru, which you can see from the hotel with an unbeatable view. The second part, Lekisilai, refers to another mountain nearby that the Maasai regard as sacred. Originally built as a family home and designed by its architect owner, the lodge has six tastefully furnished ensuite rooms, each named after a bird you can spot or hear around the lodge.
